Fires in the Wilderness
A Story of the
Civilian Conservation Corps Boys

Author with John Gilmour (93 years young) and some readers from Midland, Michigan.
For the past several years, I have been living in the shadow of giants -- men who survived the Great Depression and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Men like John Gilmour, Al Hubbard, John Selesky and others have kindly shared their stories of struggle and survival during a difficul era.
As boys, those in the Civilian Conservation Corps forever changed the our country and environment. From 1933-42 the Civilian Conservation Corps boys fought wild fires, planted hundreds of millions of trees, improved streams, built roads and bridges, and contructed state and national parks. The natural wonders of our country were preserved by young men who did back-breaking work in order to rescue their families.
Follow the story of Polish kids from Grand Rapids who end up in the wilderness, growing up in a hurry and learning hard life lessons.
Ideal for readers 8+ years old. This book includes a glossary of terms plus an author's notebook that offers learning opportunities for readers and teachers.
